DIY Tips on Swimming Pool Maintenance

Having a swimming pool during the dog days of summer is quite a treat, but who wants to spend more time maintaining it than enjoying it? The simple fact that swimming pools can be a headache is one of the main reasons why many homeowners don’t install one. However, proper swimming pool maintenance is not as hard as some people make it seem. Realistically, you only need to know about a few easy tricks.

1. Use Your Vacuum

Your pool should have a vacuum system installed and operational. Using this vacuum before you take a dip will not only help to maintain your pool but it will also make the experience much more enjoyable for all those in the water. Be sure to point the return jet nozzles downward so that you don’t get a lot of disruption on the surface. This quick tip will allow you to keep a closer eye on the bottom of your pool where damage often occurs.

2. Keep Debris at Bay

Do neighbourhood kids run screaming from your pool? You probably allowed too much debris to accumulate in the water. This can clog drains and vacuums pretty quickly, and will eventually stop your filter from being able to do its job. Start by skimming the top of the water with your netted basket. This can be done very quickly and is not difficult at all. Also, try to keep any leaves, sticks, rocks, or other undesirables away from the edge of the pool. You can clear the area pretty efficiently when you are out doing some simple yard work.

3. Monitor the Chemicals

Your pool will only stay suitable for swimming if the chemicals are in perfect balance. Although this may seem like one of the hardest parts about swimming pool maintenance, it is not if you know what to do. Testing the chemistry takes no time at all and should be done at least two to three times a week, particularly after heavy use of the pool or changes in weather, like rain. Make small adjustments as you go, starting with the pH balance first. Bring in a sample of your pool water to the Purewater store and we’d be happy to make recommendations. If terms like alkalinity make your head spin, we’re here to help.
Your pool is supposed to help you relax, not stress you out. You can enjoy your summer while also maintaining a welcoming pool simply by using these three easy tips. If swimming pool maintenance still sounds like a headache, don’t worry. Just call Purewater and we’d be happy to set up a maintenance package so the only thing you need to worry about is perfecting your Marco Polo skills.
